Sabeer Khan, MBA ’10, is working as an intern for NYSTAR, the New York State Foundation for Science Technology and Innovation. NYSTAR supports technology development, innovation and commercialization leading to economic growth in New York State.
Sabeer writes: “I am presently working at NYSTAR for the summer doing a valuation of their portfolio and creating financial models, which is a great learning experience for me.”
“This Monday, NYSTAR organized a Intern-Luncheon with 17 interns from NYSTAR, the State Chamber office, NYSERDA (NY State Energy Research and Development Authority) and the SUNY Research Center. The lunch was also attended by the Executive Director of NYSTAR Edward Reinfurt, Officers of the Higher Education Chamber Office, and other officers from NYSTAR.”
“We had a guest speaker –Dr. Shaker A. Mousa, Executive Director at the Pharmaceutical Research Institute at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences - who was well versed in the field of Pharmacy (28 + years experience). He earlier worked at DuPont. Professor Mousa gave a short talk on the importance of an internship and how it relates to your first job. He suggested we think about what we will learn in an internship that will help us gain the experience required for our next job. He also mentioned that you need an interdisciplinary approach for every problem, and that you should never be afraid of a new task. With hard work and determination, one can crack the impossible problems too.”
“After the guest speech, we had an open discussion among all the interns, and in particular the director of NYSTAR wanted all of the interns who were diverse and come from various fields and backgrounds to think and come up with solution for the ‘Brain-drain’ problem in the capital (knowledge retention). Future luncheons are planned on the same lines.”
