Frank James MS, PhD ’67 heads a fund which has won the prestigious 2009 Lipper Award for the Best Mixed-Asset Target Allocation Moderate Fund over a 10 Year period.
The $415 million James Balanced: Golden Rainbow Fund (GLRBX), managed by James Advantage Funds received the award from among a group of 145 eligible funds.
The Lipper Fund Awards highlight funds that excel in delivering consistently strong total return performance, relative to peers. The Awards are given to funds in 21 countries worldwide.
A descendant of legendary outlaw Jesse James, Dr. James was also profiled in an April 2008 Barron’s article: “Our All-Star Defensive Team – Ten Funds That Can Keep an Investor's Money Safe.” Barron’s selected an ‘all-star’ roster of 10 “mutual fund managers best able to persevere through a downturn.”
Dr. James has been a long time observer and analyst of financial markets. His Rensselaer dissertation, “The Implications of Trend Persistency in Portfolio Management,” provided a computer-based study of price movements of every security listed on the NYSE between 1926 and 1960.
James shared the news of his Lipper award with Lally School Dean David Gautschi and reflected upon how his training at Rensselaer has influenced his career: “[Lipper Award] Competition is intense and our staff happily displays the three citations. RPI taught me no ‘secrets of investing,’ but I credit my schooling for teaching me how to analyze data and make good decisions.”
